Abstract

The security situation in Nigeria has deteriorated, assuming a worrisome dimension. This situation has been worse from the inception of democratic government from 1999.

There has been incessant attack and people dispossess of their valuables, organizations are also not left out in such attacks. Multinational companies such as SPDC and NLNG that are operating within the Bonny Sea which is located in Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State have witnessed frequent attack by pirates. This has attracted great concern from national and international organizations. Foreign nationals are apprehensive and not interested in direct investment. Those already in the country are going back to their countries.

This paper seeks to address the increase of maritime piracy in Nigerian territorial waters. It will also identify the factors that have contributed to the frequency of its occurrence, its effect on the economy and security of the nation. The paper will finally, suggest measures that could be put in place to end or reduce it to the barest minimum on the nation’s territorial waters.
