Abstract

This paper is a review paper and it investigates the level of Academic staff Motivation and motivational strategies for tertiary institutions sustainable development in Nigeria. Secondary data were used in the paper presentation. The data were collected from online publications and print materials. The paper discovered that the level of motivation of academic staff of tertiary institutions in Nigeria is low and poor and the factors responsible for the low and poor level of motivation among academic staff of tertiary institutions in Nigeria include; poor salaries, inadequate infrastructure facilities, poor access to research grant, poor payment of earned allowance, later payment of salaries, poor staff training programme,  unconducive working environment and poor involvement in decision making. The paper also identified increments in salaries, prompt payment of salaries, payment of earned allowance, provision of adequate infrastructure facilities, effective staff training programme, provision of adequate research grants, and provision of a conducive working environment  as motivational strategies for motivating academic staff and for tertiary institutions sustainable development in Nigeria.
